SAIL told to step up output of value-added products
Closing the just passed year with a 28 per cent rise in exports, Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) should now ready itself to further expand its international presence and add more value-added steels to its product basket.
Emerging economies
Steel Secretary G. Mohan Kumar, during a review of SAIL’s marketing functions at the company’s Central Marketing Organisation (CMO) headquarters here, also advised the company to tap the emerging economies with more of value-added products.
He urged the company to overcome the challenges of the sluggish market scenario and tap the opportunities arising out of SAIL’s ongoing modernisation and expansion drive. SAIL is the country’s largest steel producer.
Emphasis on value-added steel sales in 2013-14 enabled SAIL to market 2.2 lakh tonnes of special steels, of which nearly one lakh tonnes comprised stainless steel. The year also saw SAIL supplying special quality slabs to meet the requirements of Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre.
In the current financial year, CMO’s product basket will be enriched with high-quality wire rods as well as auto-grade cold-rolled steel from the brand new mills, which have come up at SAIL’s IISCO and Bokaro Steel Plants, respectively.
