As the strike by Tamil Nadu Transport Workers’ unions entered the fourth day on Sunday, temporary drivers have been employed to run buses.

Transport Workers’ unions are demanding wage hike among other things.

Chief Minister K Palaniswami on Friday had chaired a meeting of ministers and senior officials to take stock of the situation, even as opposition parties including the DMK and the Left, besides actor Kamal Haasan, urged the government to end the stalemate by holding talks with trade unions.

Strike by transport unions across Tamil Nadu over wage-related issues is causing hardships to people with the government making all-out efforts to address the situation.

The agitating trade unions, however, remained firm on their demands relating to a wage-fixation mechanism.

CITU leader A Sounderrajan, who participated in Thursday’s talks with the government, said that “not even 10 per cent” of buses were being operated across Tamil Nadu.”

Taking a tough stand, the Tamil Nadu government on Saturday asked agitating transport workers to resume work by Sunday or face departmental action.
