With 66 medals, India better Glasgow medal haul
From the boxing ring to the shooting range to the athletics arena, Indian athletes continued their golden journey at Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on the penultimate day.
Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, paddler Manika Batra and boxer Mary Kom bagged the gold medals in their respective discipline on Saturday.
Sunday, on the eleventh and final day of Commonwealth Games 2018, Badminton queen Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win two singles golds at the Commonwealth Games. She clinched the coveted women’s singles title after defeating compatriot PV Sindhu 21-18, 23-21 in a hard-fought final.
Saina won all her 12 matches in Gold Coast and stayed unbeaten throughout in the tournament.
Besides these, India had a chance to win gold in badminton men’s singles with Kidambi Srikanth playing opposite Malaysian great Lee Chong Wei in men’s singles final. However, he settled for silver after losing to Chong Wei in the finals.
In squash, Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal won silver in women’s doubles while Achanta Sharath Kamal bagged bronze medal in men’s single. Chirag Shetty and Satwik Rankireddy picked up silver in men’s doubles badminton finals in the concluding match of the year.
India have won 26 gold, 20 silver and 20 bronze medals taking the total tally of medals to 66.
