One security personnel died and at least nine others — including Jammu and Kashmir Police personnel and Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) jawans — were injured in the encounter that ensued in the Jalalabad Sunjwan area of Jammu district in the wee hours on Friday.

Five personnel were injured in the night. Among them was Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) SP Patel of the CISF, who succumbed to his injuries. Five more sustained injuries in the morning when a terrorist threw a grenade from a Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL).

Police Head Constable Balraj Singh of Kathua, SPO Sahil Sharma of Akhnoor, CISF’s Parmod Patra of Odisha and Amir Soran of Assam were among those injured in the gunfight between the security forces and terrorists.

Two terrorists were also killed in the Jammu encounter. Sources said the terrorists were part of an infiltration module. The terrorists eliminated appeared to have been Fidayeens or suicide attackers, a security official said. “They were carrying a large amount of ammunition,” he said.

Jammu and Kashmir DGP Dilbag Singh told India Today the operation is still on. “Troops are on the ground. We are zeroing in on the terrorists,” he said.
