Trudeau Govt ‘Consistently Interfering’ In India’s Internal Affairs: New Delhi Rejects Election Meddling Report
India has rejected a probe report by the Foreign Interference Commission identifying India as the “second most active country” after China engaging in electoral foreign interference in Canada.
The Ministry of External Affairs said it is in fact Canada which has been “consistently interfering” in India’s internal affairs.
“We have seen a report about alleged activities of purported interference. It is in fact Canada which has been consistently interfering in India’s internal affairs. This has also created an environment for illegal migration and organised criminal activities. We reject the report’s insinuations on India and expect that the support system enabling illegal migration will not be further countenanced,” the MEA said in a statement.
The Foreign Interference Commission report comes about six weeks before the Liberal Party chooses a new leader to replace Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation this month. The report has alleged that like China, India conducts foreign interference through diplomatic channels and proxy agents within Canada.
News agency Reuters quoting the report said, “The Canadian government was slow in responding to efforts by China and India to interfere in the country’s elections but their outcome was unaffected by the meddling.”
The Canadian government in a statement said it would carefully review the report’s findings and use them to push back against any foreign interference.
