Abu Azmi Gets Anticipatory Bail In Aurangzeb Remarks Case

A Mumbai court granted anticipatory bail to Samajwadi Party MLA Abu Azmi in a case over his remarks praising Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.

He reached the Marine Drive police station on Wednesday to appear before the police in connection with the case, where he said: “I have been granted bail, and I am going to the Marine Drive police station. The court has directed me to visit the police station and sign before the police for three days.”

Azmi was suspended from the Maharashtra assembly till the ongoing budget session ends on March 26 over his remarks hailing Aurangzeb. During an interview, Azmi had described Aurangzeb as a great administrator and that the country flourished under his rule. A massive controversy was trigerred due to his remark as members of the treasury benches asserted that Aurangzeb’s praise amounted to insult of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his warrior-son Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, both revered figures in Maharashtra.

On Tuesday, Azmi paid tributes to Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj on his death anniversary, hailing him has a valiant warrior. In a post on X, he said: “On the martyrdom day of the second Chhatrapati of Swarajya, the valiant warrior, Dharmveer Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, I pay my humble tribute.”
