Myanmar Earthquake LIVE Updates: 20 Dead, Hundreds Feared Trapped, Rescue Operations Underway; Helpline Issued

A total of six earthquakes jolted Myanmar on Friday as per the National Center for Seismology. The calamity not only caused damage of property but also claimed lives. The first earthquake measured 7.7 on the Richter scale, the second was of 6.4 magnitude just 12 minutes later. Another aftershock measuring 4.4 magnitude was recorded nearly an hour later. Tremors were also felt in parts of Thailand and northeast India, and China. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern after a massive earthquake struck the labouring countries. The rescue and relief operations are underway. Local media have so far reported 20 deaths.

According to the United States Geological Survey, the earthquake hit at around 11.50 am and the epicentre was 16 Km northwest of  Sagaing, Myanmar, at a depth of 10 km.

Strong tremors were also felt in Bangkok, Thailand, causing chaos at the airport. Visuals shared on social media platforms showed buildings intensely shaking as the earthquake struck.

“EQ of M: 7.2, On: 28/03/2025 11:50:52 IST, Lat: 21.93 N, Long: 96.07 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Myanmar,” NCS said in a post on X.
