Storm picks up speed, likely to hit coast by 1:30pm; 7357 people evacuated

The severe cyclonic storm ‘Vardah’ is expected to hit Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh’s coastal regions at around 1:30pm on Monday, officials said.
A high alert has been sounded across the two states and disaster management teams like NDRF, Indian Navy and Indian Airforce have deployed their units to manage the situation.
“The severe cyclonic storm ‘Vardah’ is now lying at about 180 kms east of Chennai,” S Balachandran, MeT Director said on Monday morning.
The MeT Director added, “The cyclone is moving westwards direction towards Chennai, likely to cross near Chennai by this afternoon.”
